The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

Benjamin Walter believed that new age reproduction techniques had diminished the essential value of an artwork. The replication was not in anyway similar to the ways of our ancestors who manage to replicate works of art and maintain its aura. In fact, the ways we reproduce works now make them meaningless. The aura which gives a piece its wow factor has no jurisdiction in these copies. Benjamin believed this was a result of the images being removed from their own setting and being place into foreign mediums and media. I agree with Benjamin's ideas that replication taints the value of a given artwork. For example, the Mona Lisa painting gathers thousand of tourist without  problem. This one painting and all of it original essence captivates the world and for it to not even be finish makes it even more captivating. However, it would not come near the same level of admiration if there was a hyperrealistic poster of it mounted on the wall. Replication has removed the originality and magic of artwork. Thus, a replication could never amount to being on the same level as an original.

The Money Spent Selling Sugar to Americans

In this article James Hamblin is addressing the issue of advertisement deception that we as Americans all fall victims to everyday. Advertising companies use tactics such as bright colors, stunning visual imagery and carefully chosen diction to create a perception about their product which may not be entirely true. Words such as "Real" have been discussed in this article to show a tactic which is used. A company such as Kellogg's uses this word to say they use "real" ingredients to give a facade of all naturally ingredients when in actuality the only real thing being used is the amount of sugar put into a product. More than 50 percent of the crops grown in America are planted to produce crops which can be manufactured into sugar. Whilst fruits and vegetables only maintain five percent of the crops. People are feeding into the industry simply because they have a very appealing taste and this drives people away from healthier produce because taste is wired into a psychological need rather than simply a sensation created from your mouth. The markets will continue to pour money into these advertisements as long as every American still has this overwhelming craving for "real" ingredients and sugar.

Manufacturing Consent

We have no way of differentiating a reliable source from a faulty one in this era. The media portrays coverage in so many different way that we have no way f knowing which to believe. The main source of information we are turn to is written by manipulative human beings such as ourselves who have the will to lean a topic towards their own opinion versus keeping the purest source out for display. Chomsky has acknowledged this issue and referred to it a a manufactured consent. The media has been leading are lives through depictions they create or they feel would be a necessary topic and rather than question authority we just mosey along and believe every word. We would believe everything that comes out of an acquaintances mouth so why believe all media coverage? They are no different from you and I. The media is entitled to an opinion just as we are and this will be the foundation of their coverage of informal and instead of acknowledging this we just give them our consent to listen.

The Ethics of Digital Manipulation

Since the creation of photography people have seen it as the purest way to capture the essence of nature.  Although it can be an accurate representation of the surrounding view it can also easily be altered. Many people weren’t aware of the idea of Photoshop at the time however, there were exceptions. People have manipulated photos since photography was invented and it proves that the innocence of photographs aren’t so innocent. Artist use Photoshop as a tool to create, enhance or manipulate images to create a visual pleasure to the eye. Whether it is reality or art they’re trying to achieve all depends on the amount of work the put in to alter the picture. Now although they might not put any work in to altering the image this does not mean it is still a pure representation of what they were trying to capture. A photo lenses can never truly capture the essence of nature. Neither can the human eye, the image we see is manipulated through the capabilities of what we posses within our eyes, and if our eyes aren’t even capable of see the true essence how can a lenses capture it. The credibility of photography is only justifiable by the viewers themselves.

Song Dong

“ The collected ingredients of a Beijing life” is an article about an artist name Song Dong written by Holland Cotter. This shows an insight to how impactful events may result in the spark of creativity or inspiration. Song Dong did not grow up in the humblest or stable setting as many of us are used to. Instead she grew up in an arear where change was inevitable and clutter was overwhelming. How could one survive in a place where there is no where or no time to settle. Sadly, this was the life she was destined to live, however it may not be as sad as it seems depending on the perception of the viewer. Where you are to see a mess which need to be abolished Song saw beauty in every piece of clutter. She saw it as a memoir to her deceased parents and that itself was a fantastic masterpiece in itself. She captured the essence of many years of one person’s life into one motionless artwork. She was able to tell a story whilst nothing moved, spoke or made a reference. She captured all of the sense and triggered imagination with only sight alone. It was this piece that left her mark on the world, her life, her home, her clutter, her mess, it all was an essence of beautiful chaos which she was able to bring fourth.
